5/10/2023 0 Comments Music note c in hertxSince the distance between the international standard pitch of A-440 and A-432 is less than a third of a semitone (31.7 cents), the difference would have been unnoticeable for most listeners. Moreover, the site suggested ways in which curious listeners could experiment with audio software in order to lower the pitch of their digital music files. Titled “Why You Should Consider Converting Your Music to A-432,” the article included video demonstrations, audio clips, quotes from Nikola Tesla and Albert Einstein, and links to resources from elsewhere on the web, all encouraging readers to reconsider the A-440 standard. For instance, when pop artist Prince hosted a live Q&A on Facebook in 2014 to promote his new album Art Official Age, a fan posted a question for the pop star: “Greetings my dear Brother…Please address the importance of ALL music being tuned to 432 Hz sound frequencies?” Prince (who had ignored other fan queries) responded to this one by posting a link to an article on a website called. Twenty-five years later, in what would seem an unlikely development, the question of an A-432 tuning standard was being hotly debated in certain corners of the internet. Although this particular initiative was ultimately unsuccessful, LaRouche and the Schiller Institute would continue for decades to argue that this subtle change in musical tuning was essential to the preservation of Western art music. ![]() At the time, the campaign found supporters among some of the biggest names in opera, such as Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Tebaldi, and Birgit Nilsson. Instead of using the international standard pitch of A-440 Hz, LaRouche’s petition argued that Italy should adopt a slightly lower pitch reference, such that the note “A” above middle “C” would instead be tuned to 432 Hz. In 1989, a LaRouche entity called the Schiller Institute petitioned the Italian legislature to abandon the standard pitch used worldwide as a musical tuning reference in broadcasting, musical instrument manufacture, and in educational and arts institutions. Alongside some of these more extreme agendas, LaRouche also maintained a longstanding commitment to a specific matter of musical reform. In his lifetime, LaRouche was known for promoting controversial political and economic causes heavily informed by conspiracy theories. president eight times and later served a prison term for mail fraud and tax evasion. When Lyndon LaRouche died in February 2019 at the age of 96, obituaries remembered him as a far-right political figure who ran for U.S. After exploring the listening practices and media engagement of 432 Hz proponents, the article asks how the rise of 432 Hz music might relate to other recent and emerging forms of music consumption, the affective marketing of sound, and the management of personal sonic space. It draws from research into some of the common historical, scientific, and conspiratorial claims made by 432 Hz advocates, as well as from qualitative data collected from dedicated 432 Hz listeners. This article examines the promise of-and skepticism towards-the concept of “frequency” that is at the center of the 432 Hz phenomenon. This preference is, for many, connected to beliefs that the A-432 Hz tuning reference can be physically, psychologically, and even spiritually beneficial. Alternatively, they prefer (and in some cases promote and advocate for) music that is tuned to a slightly lower, A-432 Hz standard. Rather, they have in common a belief that music tuned to the standard pitch of A-440 Hz is in some sense “out of tune” with nature or humanity. Increasingly connected via social media, listeners in this subculture do not necessarily share the same musical tastes or backgrounds. ![]() 432 Hz music is a relatively recent internet-based phenomenon that has attracted listeners and musicians from all parts of the world.

In the 1940s, Stafford Happ, a soil scientist at the U.S. In 1917, Grove Karl Gilbert, a storied geologist who studied western North America, revealed that gold mining in the late 1800s had caused sediment to fill and reshape deep river valleys in the California Sierra Nevadas. Merritts and Walter weren't the first to realize that erosion has clogged many U.S. By removing centuries of mud, they have returned the stream to its marshy, precolonial glory, and are now demonstrating the environmental payoff such strategies can deliver. Now, the duo is hoping to inspire a new approach to stream restoration by turning back the clock at Big Spring Run. Their study is "one of the most influential papers I've seen." And that recognition has been driven by Walter and Merritts, says Noah Snyder, a geomorphologist at Boston College. "There's been an accelerated recognition of how ubiquitous this sediment is," she says. Although dams are not solely to blame for legacy sediment, it's now clear colonial-era erosion did dramatically alter streams in much of the continent's tectonically quiet eastern half, says Ellen Wohl, a geomorphologist at Colorado State University, Fort Collins. ![]() New research is settling many of the debates that Merritts's and Walter's paper touched off. "It was uncomfortable," Merritts says, "because I knew that my colleagues had other ideas." And the work raised concerns that a massive, multibillion-dollar effort to clean up the nearby Chesapeake Bay would fail if planners didn't figure out how to prevent massive slugs of legacy sediment, which also carries harmful nutrients, from sloshing down the bay's many tributaries. It called into question expensive efforts to restore rivers by using heavy equipment to resculpt them into what practitioners believed had been their natural shapes. The finding challenged decades of conventional scientific wisdom and sparked pushback from researchers who said the pair had overstated its case. "We realized," Walter says, "that the had been completely manufactured and altered." The original streams, Merritts and Walter argued in an influential 2008 paper published in Science, are now buried beneath millions of tons of "legacy sediment" that was released by colonial-era farming and logging, and then trapped behind countless dams built to power flour, timber, and textile mills. The pair, professors at Franklin & Marshall College (F&M), showed that Big Spring Run and many other meandering, high-banked streams in the eastern United States look nothing like the low-banked, marshy waterways that existed when European explorers first arrived nearly 500 years ago. But a dozen years ago, it catapulted Merritts and Walter to scientific prominence. ![]() More mud stirred, heading downstream.īrown water might not hold much interest for many researchers. Walter did a little jig as his colleague and spouse, geomorphologist Dorothy Merritts, watched. BIG SPRING RUN IN PENNSYLVANIA-Centuries ago, parts of the eastern United States were drowned in mud. ![]() At Disney there was even talk of shutting down the animation department altogether. In a country roiled by anti-Vietnam War protests and tremendous social upheaval, animation seemed irrelevant, relegated to commercials and Saturday-morning cartoon programs for children, though animation as an art form had not been originally intended just for kids. ![]() That would be way more impressive than being mentored by Disney animators.” You would get a lot more attention if you were the backup quarterback for a junior-college football team. ![]() But no one was really interested in that in my town. “There was a point where I was probably one of a handful of young animators in the world. “Nobody was being trained in full animation anymore except Disney-it was literally the only game in town,” recalls Bird. But as the 60s waned, it became apparent, as Burton later noticed, that Disney had not gone out of its way to train new people. The next two decades would bring Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, and 101 Dalmatians. As Neal Gabler, Disney’s biographer, observed, “After Snow White, one could not really go back to Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.” Snow White ushered in Disney’s golden age of animation over the next five years there was a veritable parade of beautifully crafted animated films, all now classics: Pinocchio, Dumbo, Fantasia, and Bambi. That 1937 classic, Disney’s first animated feature film, had been given an honorary Academy Award and was beloved by children, adults, critics, artists, and intellectuals everywhere. In the early years, starting in the late 30s, Disney animation had been gloriously realized by the Nine Old Men: Les Clark, Marc Davis, Ollie Johnston, Frank Thomas, Milt Kahl, Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, John Lounsbery, and Wolfgang Reitherman-all of whom had worked with Walt on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Its animated films had lost much of their luster, and Disney’s original supervising animators, nicknamed the “Nine Old Men,” were heading for that Palm Springs at the end of the mind, either retiring or dying. Disney, as the Disney Brothers Studio, in 1923, was beginning to lose its way. The Walt Disney Studios, the wildly successful entertainment empire he had founded with his brother, Roy O. ![]() One of his last acts before succumbing to lung cancer was looking over the storyboards for The Aristocats, an animated feature he would not live to see. But it was the new generation of animators, mostly from CalArts. As director and writer Brad Bird ( The Incredibles, Ratatouille) observes, “People think it was the businessmen, the suits, who turned Disney Animation around. Their journey begins, and ends, with the Walt Disney Studios. Even more remarkable was that so many of the animators not only went to the same school but were students together, in the now storied CalArts classes of the 1970s. The list of their record-breaking and award-winning films-which include The Brave Little Toaster, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Toy Story, Pocahontas, Cars, A Bug’s Life, The Incredibles, Corpse Bride, Ratatouille, Coraline-is remarkable. In November 2012, the Los Angeles Times reported that directors who had been students in the California Institute of the Arts’ animation programs had generated more than $26 billion at the box office since 1985, breathing new life into the art of animation. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Best tuning forkAll the findings thus reached imply that different tunes lead to variation in reported moods, even though they do not bring about changes in sympathetic and parasympathetic activation levels.
